“Habitat is fertile ground for relationships to grow…”

~ Rev. Luke Christy, Senior Pastor

Mills River United Methodist Church has strengthened its mission work through a monthly partnership with Henderson County Habitat for Humanity. Each month, a group from the church works with Habitat’s team, recently raising the walls on a new home in memory of a beloved church member, Johnnie Wright. Members raised funds, assembled the walls, and wrote blessings on the framing, honoring Johnnie’s love for building.

On wall-raising day, the congregation joined the future homeowner, Gyöngyi, and her children, sharing prayers and homemade cakes in gratitude. “Habitat is fertile ground for relationships to grow,” said Rev. Luke Christy, noting the deep bonds that form between church members, homeowners, and Habitat staff.

Since early 2024, around three dozen members have volunteered, with many returning each month and new faces joining as well. “It’s been easy for us to plug into,” said Matt Grant, the volunteer coordinator, adding that the group comes ready to serve with both hands-on help and encouragement.
